About Phoneme Substitution

What this skill is

Phoneme substitution is swapping one sound out of a word and replacing it with another to make a completely new word. Children change the first sound (cat to hat), the last sound (cat to cap), or the middle vowel sound (cat to cot).

When children learn it

Phoneme substitution is taught in 1st grade and reinforced in 2nd grade. Swapping initial consonants comes first, while substituting middle vowel sounds develops as reading vocabulary expands.

Teaching Tips

  • Use word ladders on paper. Write "cat", cross out the "c", write an "h", and ask your child to read the new word "hat".
  • Have your child identify which part of the word changed: the beginning, middle, or end.

Common Mistakes

  • Accidentally changing two sounds instead of just the target sound (turning "cat" into "hop").
  • Finding middle vowel substitutions much harder than swapping the starting consonant.
