About Author's Purpose
What this skill is
Author's purpose is the reason an author wrote a text: to persuade the reader to adopt an opinion, to inform them with real facts, or to entertain them with a compelling story. Remembering the acronym PIE (Persuade, Inform, Entertain) helps students classify intent.
When children learn it
The core PIE framework is introduced in 2nd and 3rd grade. Upper elementary (4th and 5th grade) introduces nuanced purposes like explaining a process or describing feelings.
Teaching Tips
- Ask the motive question: "Does the author want to teach us facts, change our mind, or tell us an imaginative story?"
- Look for persuasive clue words like "should", "best", "must", and "in my opinion".
Common Mistakes
- Thinking a text is meant to entertain simply because it includes funny illustrations or interesting facts.
- Missing subtle persuasive language in opinion pieces disguised as informational articles.
