About Text Connections

What this skill is

Text connections involve linking what is read to prior knowledge: text-to-self (relating a character's experience to personal life), text-to-text (comparing two stories), and text-to-world (connecting a book to real community events).

When children learn it

Personal text-to-self connections begin in kindergarten read-alouds. Text-to-text and text-to-world comparisons are introduced and written independently in 2nd and 3rd grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask the anchor question: "Has anything like this ever happened to you, or does this remind you of another story we read?"
  • Keep the focus on the book: after sharing a memory, connect it back to how it helps understand the character's feelings.

Common Mistakes

  • Making tangential connections that pull attention completely away from understanding the book.
  • Struggling to find similarities between two different books with dissimilar illustrations.
