About Animals
What this skill is
Animal science covers the vast diversity of the animal kingdom, including vertebrate groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish) and invertebrates (insects, spiders). Children learn about animal adaptations, habitats, camouflage, diets (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore), structural traits, physical survival skills, and life cycles (metamorphosis). When children learn it
Basic animal names, sounds, and body coverings are taught in PreK and kindergarten. In 1st through 3rd grade, students classify vertebrate groups and habitats. In 4th and 5th grade, lessons focus on structural adaptations, innate versus learned behaviors, and ecosystem roles.
Common Mistakes
- Classifying whales and dolphins as fish because they swim in the ocean, missing that they breathe air and nurse young like mammals.

- Confusing herbivores and carnivores, assuming big animals like elephants must eat meat to grow so large.
