What this skill is
Living and nonliving classification teaches children to distinguish living organisms (plants, animals, people) from nonliving things (rocks, toys, water) based on scientific life characteristics. Living things grow, take in nutrients and water, reproduce, breathe or exchange gases, and respond to their environment, while nonliving things do not possess these biological traits during elementary life science units, nature investigations, and classroom experiments.
When children learn it
Living versus nonliving sorting is introduced in kindergarten and 1st grade through nature walks, picture cards, and object sorts. In 2nd grade, students evaluate tricky edge cases (like seeds, dormant trees, or robot toys) to deepen criteria-based scientific classification skills.
Common Mistakes
