About Electricity and Magnetism

What this skill is

Electromagnetism examines electric charge flow through closed conductive loops (circuits with batteries, wires, and loads) and magnetic forces created by North and South poles that attract opposites and repel identical poles.

When children learn it

Magnet sorting is taught in 2nd grade; closed circuits, switches, conductors, and electromagnetism are mastered in 3rd through 5th grade (NGSS 3-PS2-3, 4-PS3-2).

Teaching Tips

  • Test kitchen metals with a refrigerator magnet: test an aluminum soda can, stainless steel spoon, iron nail, and copper penny. Note which metals click onto the magnet and which do not to discover true ferromagnetic materials.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving open circuit gaps on schematic diagrams and wondering why the bulb will not illuminate.
  • Assuming all shiny metals are magnetic (iron, nickel, and cobalt attract; aluminum, copper, and gold do not).
  • Confusing magnetic poles (North and South) with electrical charges (Positive and Negative).
