What this skill is
Material properties science investigates the physical characteristics of solid objects and materials. Children learn to observe, describe, test, and compare properties such as hardness, flexibility (bendy/rigid), texture (rough/smooth), transparency (clear/opaque), magnetism, thermal conductivity, electrical resistance, density, and water absorbency. Understanding material properties explains why specific materials are chosen to build tools, clothes, buildings, and everyday objects during physical science units.
When children learn it
Sensory material exploration begins in kindergarten and 1st grade with basic descriptor sorting (hard/soft, heavy/light). In 2nd grade and 3rd grade, students conduct structured physical property tests (sink/float, magnetic pull, water absorbency) during physical science units, lab investigations, and classroom experiments.
Common Mistakes
