About States of Matter
What this skill is
Matter exists in three primary observable states: solids have fixed shape and volume; liquids have fixed volume but take the shape of their container; gases expand to fill any volume. Adding or removing thermal energy drives melting, freezing, evaporating, and condensing.
When children learn it
Solid and liquid sorting begins in 2nd grade; microscopic particle behavior and gas properties are mastered in 4th and 5th grade (NGSS 2-PS1-4, 5-PS1-1).
Teaching Tips
- Demonstrate gas mass with balloons: tape an uninflated balloon to one end of a ruler and an inflated balloon to the other, balancing the ruler on a pencil fulcrum. The inflated balloon tips down, proving air has measurable weight!
Common Mistakes
- Thinking gases have no mass or weight because air is invisible.
- Thinking water disappears forever when it evaporates rather than turning into invisible water vapor.
- Assuming cold makes items melt rather than heat energy.
