About The Water Cycle

What this skill is

The hydrologic cycle describes continuous water movement: solar heat evaporates surface water into vapor; rising vapor cools and condenses into cloud droplets; accumulated drops precipitate as rain or snow; and water collects in rivers, lakes, and aquifers.

When children learn it

Diagrams are introduced in 2nd grade; thermodynamic phase transitions and global water distribution are mastered in 4th and 5th grade (NGSS 5-ESS2-2).

Teaching Tips

  • Make a "Water Cycle in a Bag": pour two inches of blue-tinted water into a zip-top bag, seal tightly, and tape to a sunny window. Watch water evaporate, condense into droplets along the top, and "rain" back down!

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking clouds are made of water vapor gas rather than tiny liquid water droplets and ice crystals.
  • Forgetting that groundwater collection and plant transpiration are integral components of the cycle.
  • Assuming rain creates "new" water rather than recycling water molecules billions of years old.
