About Context Clues
What this skill is
Context clues are textual hints provided by the author within the surrounding sentence or paragraph (definitions, synonyms, antonyms, examples) that allow readers to infer unknown words.
When children learn it
Using sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase is a foundational CCSS standard across 2nd through 5th grade (CCSS 2.L.4.a, 3.L.4.a, 4.L.4.a, 5.L.4.a).
Teaching Tips
- Be a "Word Detective": cover the mystery word with your thumb. Have your child read the rest of the sentence and guess what word fits in the blank. Then look at the mystery word to see if the clues match!
Common Mistakes
- Guessing word meanings randomly without looking at surrounding sentences.
- Missing contrast clue words like "unlike", "however", or "but".
- Stopping after reading the single sentence without checking the next line.
