About Homographs
What this skill is
Homographs are words sharing identical spelling but different pronunciations and meanings depending on context (e.g., wind the clock vs. cold wind; lead the team vs. lead pencil).
When children learn it
Taught in 4th and 5th grade reading conventions and dictionary skills (CCSS 4.L.4.a, 5.L.4.c).
Teaching Tips
- Read the sentence out loud both ways: try "I saw a tear in her eye" (crying) versus "I saw a tear in her jacket" (rip). Hearing the two pronunciations in context makes the homograph rule clear.
Common Mistakes
- Pronouncing the word with the wrong vowel sound because of reading too quickly.
- Failing to notice whether the word acts as a verb or a noun in the sentence.
- Confusing homographs (spelled same, sound different) with homophones (sound same, spelled different).
