About Biographical Writing
What this skill is
A biography is a factual informative account of a person's life, detailing their early years, major accomplishments, character traits, obstacles overcome, and lasting impact on the world.
When children learn it
Taught in 3rd through 5th grade reading and social studies research projects (CCSS 3.W.2, 4.W.7).
Teaching Tips
- Ask: "What was this person's superpower?". Whether it was courage, curiosity, or persistence, focusing on the character trait that helped them achieve their goals makes the biography inspiring to write.
Common Mistakes
- Listing only birth and death dates without explaining why the person was significant.
- Confusing biography (writing about someone else) with autobiography (writing about oneself).
- Failing to organize the person's life chronologically.
