About Five-Paragraph Essay

What this skill is

The five-paragraph essay is a standard expository framework consisting of an introduction (with hook and thesis), three focused body paragraphs (each with supporting evidence), and a concluding synthesis.

When children learn it

Introduced in 4th grade and developed into a standard academic writing format in 5th grade and middle school (CCSS 5.W.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Break the essay across three days: Day 1 plan the outline and write the introduction. Day 2 write the 3 body paragraphs (one idea per box). Day 3 write the conclusion and polish. Breaking it into small bites prevents overwhelm.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing one giant run-on block of text without paragraph indents.
  • Repeating the exact same points across all three body paragraphs.
  • Restating the thesis in the conclusion using the exact identical words.
