About How-To Writing
What this skill is
How-to (procedural) writing informs and guides the reader through a sequence of steps to accomplish a task, using chronological transition words (First, Next, Then, Finally) and clear action verbs.
When children learn it
Writing informative/explanatory texts naming a topic and supplying steps begins in 1st and 2nd grade (CCSS 1.W.2, 2.W.2).
Teaching Tips
- Use the transition word box: write "First, Next, Then, After that, Finally" on scrap paper. Have your child cross off each word as they use it to start each step in their how-to guide.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping foundational setup steps (e.g., forgetting to list materials needed before starting).
- Overusing the transition word "and then" at the start of every sentence.
- Writing steps out of chronological sequence.
