About Research and Notes
What this skill is
Research and note-taking involves finding credible factual sources, selecting relevant information, paraphrasing ideas, and recording source titles to avoid plagiarism.
When children learn it
Conducting short research projects and taking notes from sources is a core 3rd through 5th grade standard (CCSS 3.W.7, 4.W.8, 5.W.8).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Bullet Rule": never write full sentences when taking notes! Only write 2 to 4 bullet keywords per fact on sticky notes. When it is time to write the report, have your child turn those keywords into original sentences.
Common Mistakes
- Copying full sentences word-for-word instead of recording bulleted keywords.
- Gathering interesting trivia that does not actually answer the research question.
- Forgetting where a piece of information was found.
