About Text Evidence

What this skill is

Citing text evidence means supporting written claims and answers by quoting or paraphrasing specific proof directly from the reading passage, using signal phrases like "According to the text".

When children learn it

Referring to explicit details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says is a major 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.RI.1, 5.RI.1).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach evidence signal stems: "The author states that...", "On page 4, the text explains...", or "According to the article...". Using a signal stem makes evidence integration feel natural and authoritative.

Common Mistakes

  • Answering based only on personal memory or opinion without referencing the text.
  • Dropping a quote into a paragraph without a signal phrase introducing it.
  • Quoting huge paragraphs rather than selecting the precise sentence that proves the point.
