About Characters and Setting
What this skill is
Characters (who the story is about) and setting (where and when the story takes place) form the narrative foundation, providing motivation, sensory atmosphere, and context for plot events.
When children learn it
Identifying and describing characters, settings, and major events begins in 1st and 2nd grade (CCSS 1.RL.3, 2.W.3), deepening through 5th grade characterization.
Teaching Tips
- Ask the two key character questions: "What does your character WANT more than anything?", and "What is STOPPING them from getting it?". Motivation makes characters feel alive.
Common Mistakes
- Describing characters only by physical clothes rather than internal traits and desires.
- Forgetting to describe the setting environment and sensory atmosphere.
- Introducing characters that serve no purpose in the story plot.
