About Perspective and Point of View
What this skill is
Point of view establishes the narrative lens through which a story is told: first-person (an inside narrator using "I") or third-person (an outside narrator using "he, she, they").
When children learn it
Comparing and contrasting point of view and writing from diverse perspectives is a 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.RL.6, 5.RL.6).
Teaching Tips
- Try the "Three Little Pigs" test: have your child tell the story from the Pig's point of view ("I built a house of bricks"), then tell it from the Wolf's point of view ("I had a terrible cold and sneezed!"). Changing perspectives is fun and eye-opening.
Common Mistakes
- Accidentally slipping between "I" and "he/she" in the middle of a story.
- Struggling to describe scenes that a first-person narrator could not physically see.
- Not noticing how changing point of view changes the reader's sympathy.
