About Story Structure
What this skill is
Story structure outlines the narrative arc: introduction (characters/setting), rising action (problem/conflict), climax (turning point), and resolution (problem solved).
When children learn it
Basic beginning, middle, and end structure begins in 1st grade (CCSS 1.W.3), developing into full plot mountain planning in 3rd through 5th grade (CCSS 3.W.3, 5.W.3).
Teaching Tips
- Draw a simple mountain: put the problem at the bottom climb, the big exciting moment at the peak, and the solution on the way down. Make sure your child can tell the three mountain steps out loud before writing.
Common Mistakes
- Writing stories that consist entirely of rising action with no satisfying resolution.
- Resolving major story conflicts with unrealistic endings like "and then I woke up and it was all a dream".
- Rushing through the middle problem without developing obstacles.
