About Writing Dialogue
What this skill is
Writing dialogue records character speech to advance plot and reveal character personality, following conventions of quotation marks, commas, capitalization, and new paragraphs for new speakers.
When children learn it
Using dialogue and descriptions of actions to show character responses is taught in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.W.3.b) and mastered through 5th grade (CCSS 5.W.3.b).
Teaching Tips
- Teach "New Speaker, New Line": whenever a different person talks, jump down to a brand new line. Act out the conversation out loud to check that the words inside the quotes sound like real people talking.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting quotation marks around spoken words or placing punctuation outside quotes.
- Overusing the speaker tag "said" instead of expressive verbs or action beats.
- Failing to start a new paragraph line when the speaker switches.
