About Supporting Details
What this skill is
Supporting details are the concrete facts, examples, explanations, and descriptions that develop, prove, and expand the main claim of a topic sentence.
When children learn it
Developing topics with facts, definitions, and details is a core standard from 2nd through 5th grade (CCSS 2.W.2, 3.W.2.b, 5.W.2.b).
Teaching Tips
- Use the "Prove It" test: read the topic sentence ("Cats make wonderful indoor pets"). Then read each detail and ask: "Does this PROVE why cats make great pets?". If not, cross it off.
Common Mistakes
- Including off-topic facts that sound interesting but do not support the specific topic sentence.
- Repeating the topic sentence using different words rather than providing fresh details.
- Giving only one detail and stopping early.
