About Transition Words
What this skill is
Transition words (such as for example, furthermore, in contrast, therefore, first, next) act as logical bridges between sentences and paragraphs, showing sequence, cause, or addition.
When children learn it
Using linking words and phrases to connect ideas within categories of information is taught from 2nd through 5th grade (CCSS 2.W.2, 3.W.2.c, 5.W.2.c).
Teaching Tips
- Create a four-category transition cheat sheet: (1) Time words (First, Next), (2) Add more words (Also, Furthermore), (3) Contrast words (However, On the other hand), (4) Ending words (Finally, In conclusion).
Common Mistakes
- Overusing the same transition word ("and then... and then... and then...").
- Picking a transition that does not match the logical relationship (using "however" when adding a similar point).
- Omitting the comma after an introductory transition word.
