About Cutting and Pasting
What this skill is
Scissor skills develop bilateral hand coordination: the dominant hand opens and closes scissors with the thumb pointing up, while the non-dominant helper hand holds and turns the paper along cutting lines.
When children learn it
Practiced in preschool and kindergarten as a core developmental readiness milestone for elementary school classroom independence.
Teaching Tips
- Draw a smiley face on your child's scissor thumb nail: tell them the smiley face must always look up at the ceiling while snipping! Teach the chant: "Just a dot, not a lot" for liquid glue.
Common Mistakes
- Holding scissors upside down with the thumb pointing toward the floor instead of toward the ceiling.
- Trying to turn the scissor hand around corners instead of using the helper hand to rotate the paper.
- Squeezing giant puddles of glue instead of placing small single dots.
