What this skill is
Possessive pronouns show ownership without using apostrophes. Possessive determiners (my, your, his, her, its, our, their) modify nouns directly ("my book"). Standalone possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs) replace possessive noun phrases completely ("the book is mine"). Solvers study possessive pronoun forms, apostrophe-free ownership, possessive determiners, pronoun agreement, and its vs it's discrimination across writing and editing.
When children learn it
Basic possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her) are introduced in 2nd grade. In 3rd through 5th grade, lessons expand to standalone possessives (mine, yours, hers, theirs), avoiding apostrophes in possessive pronouns (its, hers, ours), and editing homophones across writing workshops and grammar units.
Common Mistakes
- Adding apostrophes to possessive pronouns (writing 'her's', 'your's', or 'their's' on possessive sentence practice lines).
- Confusing possessive 'its' (belonging to it) with the contraction 'it's' (it is) on editing passages and quizzes.
- Confusing possessive 'their' with adverb 'there' or contraction 'they're' on sentence completion sheets during grammar.
