About Quotation Marks
What this skill is
Quotation marks (" ") enclose the exact spoken words of a character in dialogue or mark titles of short works like poems, songs, and articles. In American English, commas and periods almost always sit inside the closing quotation mark.
When children learn it
Quotation marks for direct dialogue and speaker tags are formally introduced in 3rd grade (CCSS L.3.2.c) and reinforced in 4th and 5th grade narrative composition and research citations.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Hug Rule": quotation marks are like arms hugging the punctuation inside ("Hello," she said). Show your child how the comma and period stay cozy inside the quotation marks before the closing quote closes the door.
Common Mistakes
- Placing periods and commas outside the closing quotation mark instead of tucking them inside.
- Putting quotation marks around indirect speech where no exact spoken words occurred (such as quoting "that he was tired").
- Forgetting to capitalize the first word inside the spoken dialogue quote.
