What this skill is
Quotation marks (" ") are punctuation marks used in pairs to enclose the exact spoken words of a speaker in dialogue or to cite direct textual evidence. Solvers study speech tagging, quotation mechanics, dialogue formatting, speaker tag punctuation, inner punctuation rules, quotation placement, direct quotation conventions, and capitalization of quoted sentences across story writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, and essay writing.
When children learn it
Basic dialogue quotation marks around exact spoken words are introduced in 2nd grade and 3rd grade. In 4th grade and 5th grade, students master split dialogue tags ("I think," said Mom, "that we should go"), commas before quotes, end punctuation placement inside quotes, and formatting new speaker paragraphs in story drafts.
Common Mistakes
- Placing periods or commas outside quotation marks instead of inside the closing quote mark (writing "hello", instead of "hello,").
- Forgetting to capitalize the first word of a direct quote when it starts a complete spoken sentence.
- Enclosing indirect speech or paraphrased thoughts in quotation marks (putting quotes around 'he said that he was tired').
