About Cryptarithms

What this skill is

Cryptarithms (alphametics) are mathematical puzzles where digits in an arithmetic problem are replaced by letters. Each letter represents a unique digit from 0 to 9, and the leading digit of a multi-digit number cannot be zero.

When children learn it

Introduced as advanced problem-solving challenges in 4th and 5th grade math enrichment units.

Teaching Tips

  • Look at the leftmost column first: when adding two multi-digit numbers results in an extra digit in the sum (like AB + CD = EFG), that new leftmost letter E MUST be 1 due to carrying!

Common Mistakes

  • Assigning the same digit to two different letters.
  • Assigning zero to the leading leftmost letter of a number.
  • Forgetting about carried ones when adding columns from right to left.
