About Magic Squares
What this skill is
A magic square is a square array of numbers where the sum of numbers in each row, column, and main diagonal is identical (the "magic constant", such as 15 for standard 1-9 3x3 squares).
When children learn it
3x3 magic squares with missing cells are practiced in 2nd and 3rd grade; full construction and 4x4 squares are explored in 4th and 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Share the center secret for 3x3 grids (digits 1-9): the middle number must always be 5! Once 5 is placed in the center, opposite pairs on every line passing through the center must add to 10 (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6).
Common Mistakes
- Satisfying the row sums but forgetting to check diagonal sums.
- Using the same digit twice in a grid when the puzzle specifies distinct digits 1 through 9.
- Trying numbers blindly instead of calculating the target sum from completed rows.
