About Sudoku
What this skill is
Sudoku is a logic-based placement puzzle where each row, column, and delineated subgrid block must contain every digit (or symbol) exactly once without repeating.
When children learn it
4x4 picture and number grids start in 1st and 2nd grade; 6x6 and standard 9x9 deduction grids are tackled in 3rd through 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Almost Full" scanning strategy: encourage your child to hunt for rows, columns, or mini-grids that have only ONE empty square left. Finding the single missing number builds immediate confidence.
Common Mistakes
- Guessing digits randomly instead of scanning rows and columns for unique open placements.
- Repeating a digit within the same subgrid block while checking only horizontal rows.
- Giving up early when a square requires cross-referencing both row and column constraints.
