About Addition Sentences
What this skill is
An addition sentence is a mathematical equation (such as 3 + 2 = 5) expressing that combining two addends produces a total sum, translating physical groups into formal mathematical symbols.
When children learn it
Representing addition with objects, fingers, and written equations begins in kindergarten (CCSS K.OA.A.1) and is consolidated in 1st grade.
Teaching Tips
- Use two different colors of toy blocks: make a red tower of 3 and a blue tower of 2. Have your child say: "3 red plus 2 blue equals 5 blocks in all". Linking colors to parts makes writing the addition sentence clear.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the plus sign (+) and equal sign (=) when copying equations.
- Writing the sum in the wrong position or omitting the equal sign entirely.
- Counting all items together but struggling to identify the two separate addends.
