About Number Bonds
What this skill is
A number bond is a pictorial representation showing part-part-whole relationships, demonstrating that a total number can be split into different pairs of component numbers (such as 8 split into 5 and 3).
When children learn it
Decomposing numbers into pairs in multiple ways is taught in kindergarten (CCSS K.OA.A.3) and forms the foundation of 1st grade addition and subtraction.
Teaching Tips
- Draw a large number bond on a paper plate: place 6 dried beans in the big circle. Have your child slide some beans to one small circle and the rest to the other. Seeing the whole split physically clarifies the diagram instantly.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing which circle represents the whole total and which circles represent the smaller parts.
- Writing the same addend in both part circles when the two parts should differ.
- Struggling to find the missing part when the whole and one part are given.
