About Doubles and Near Doubles
What this skill is
Doubles facts add identical numbers (6 + 6 = 12). Near-doubles (or doubles-plus-one) leverage memorized doubles to solve adjacent sums mentally (such as 6 + 7 being 6 + 6 + 1 = 13).
When children learn it
Learning doubles and using them to derive near-doubles is explicitly taught as a primary mental math strategy in 1st and 2nd grade (CCSS 1.OA.C.6, 2.OA.B.2).
Teaching Tips
- Connect doubles to real life: 2 hands have 5 + 5 = 10 fingers, an egg carton has 6 + 6 = 12 eggs, a spider has 4 + 4 = 8 legs. When your child sees 6 + 7, ask: "What double is hiding inside?".
Common Mistakes
- Adding two instead of one when using near-doubles strategies.
- Subtracting one instead of adding one (such as thinking 7 + 8 is 8 + 8 - 1 but making an arithmetic slip).
- Failing to recognize when a problem is a near-doubles fact in mixed practice.
