About Skip Counting

What this skill is

Skip counting is counting forward or backward by a number other than one. It builds understanding of equal groups, patterns on the hundreds chart, and foundational automaticity for multiplication fact families.

When children learn it

Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s within 100 and 1,000 is taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.NBT.A.2) and extended to 3s, 4s, and other factors in 3rd grade multiplication preparation.

Teaching Tips

  • Chant skip counting patterns with hand claps or bouncing a ball: bounce on 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Rhythmic chanting builds auditory recall that makes completing worksheet patterns automatic.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing rhythm at decade shifts, such as jumping from 45 to 60 instead of 50 when skip-counting by fives.
  • Reverting into counting by ones when mental automaticity falters.
  • Confusing skip counting by 2s starting from an odd number versus starting from an even number.
