About Bar Graphs

What this skill is

A bar graph uses rectangular bars of equal width where the height or length of each bar is proportional to the frequency or quantity of each category on a scaled axis.

When children learn it

Drawing and interpreting bar graphs with single-unit scales is taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.MD.D.10). Scaled bar graphs (scale of 2, 5, or 10) are mastered in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.MD.B.3).

Teaching Tips

  • Use a straight edge or ruler: lay it flat across the top of the bar straight to the vertical numbers on the left axis. Point out what the axis tick marks count by (1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s) before reading.

Common Mistakes

  • Misreading the axis scale, assuming each grid line represents 1 when the scale counts by 2s or 5s.
  • Reading bar values that fall between grid lines incorrectly.
  • Answering "how many more" questions by stating the bar total rather than calculating the difference.
