About Line Plots
What this skill is
A line plot (dot plot) records measurement frequencies by placing X marks or dots above numerical values along a number line, displaying data distribution across halves, fourths, and eighths.
When children learn it
Making line plots to display measurement data in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) and solving problems with this data is a key 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.MD.B.4, 5.MD.B.2).
Teaching Tips
- Use grid paper: make each X exactly one grid box tall so every X has identical height. If 4 pencils measured 5 1/2 inches, stack exactly 4 neat Xs above 5 1/2.
Common Mistakes
- Stacking Xs with uneven spacing, creating a false visual impression that smaller counts look taller.
- Misreading fractional intervals along the number line axis.
- Forgetting that each X represents one specific observed object or measurement.
