About Mean, Median, Mode and Range
What this skill is
Measures of central tendency and spread summarize datasets: Mean is the arithmetic average, Median is the middle value when ordered, Mode is the most frequent value, and Range is the difference between maximum and minimum.
When children learn it
Introduced in 5th grade and formalized in 6th grade statistics (CCSS 6.SP.B.5).
Teaching Tips
- Use the popular memory rhyme: "Hey diddle diddle, the Median's in the middle; you add and divide for the Mean. The Mode is the one that appears the most, and the Range is the difference between!".
Common Mistakes
- Finding the median without ordering the numbers from least to greatest first.
- Averaging the two middle numbers incorrectly when an even number of data points exists.
- Confusing the definitions of mean (average) and median (middle).
