About Dividing Decimals
What this skill is
Dividing decimals requires placing the decimal point directly into the quotient when dividing by a whole number, or multiplying both dividend and divisor by powers of 10 to clear decimals from the divisor.
When children learn it
Dividing decimals to hundredths is a benchmark 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.NBT.B.7).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Elevator Rule" when dividing by a whole number: push the decimal point straight up to the top floor (the quotient line) before doing any math! Putting the decimal in place first prevents placement errors.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to move the decimal point in the dividend when shifting the divisor decimal.
- Putting the decimal point in the wrong spot in the quotient.
- Stopping with a remainder instead of annexing zeros to complete division.
