About Subtracting Decimals
What this skill is
Subtracting decimals requires aligning decimal points and annexing placeholder zeros to the top number when the bottom number has more decimal places (such as 5.00 - 2.34).
When children learn it
Subtracting decimals to hundredths is practiced in 4th grade money, and mastered through thousandths in 5th grade (CCSS 5.NBT.B.7).
Teaching Tips
- Always add the "Zero Fillers" first: in 7 - 2.45, write 7 as 7.00 before subtracting. Never let your child subtract until both numbers have the exact same number of decimal digits.
Common Mistakes
- Not writing trailing zeros on the top number, leading to simply bringing down bottom digits without subtracting (writing 5.2 - 1.34 = 4.14 instead of 3.86).
- Misaligning decimal points.
- Regrouping errors across multiple decimal zeros.
