About Rounding Decimals
What this skill is
Rounding decimals replaces a decimal value with an approximation to a specified place value, based on whether the subsequent digit is 5 or greater (round up) or 4 or less (round down).
When children learn it
Rounding decimals to any place is a core 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.NBT.A.4).
Teaching Tips
- Circle the place you are rounding to, and underline the digit to its right. If the underlined digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the circled digit and drop all digits after it. Dropping everything after the rounded place prevents trailing zero confusion.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving trailing zeros after the rounded decimal place when not required, or adding zeros that change the required precision.
- Looking at the wrong digit when deciding whether to round up or down.
- Rounding whole numbers when the instructions ask to round to the nearest tenth.
