About Multiplication Properties
What this skill is
Multiplication properties describe fundamental structural rules: commutative (a x b = b x a), associative ((a x b) x c = a x (b x c)), and distributive (a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c).
When children learn it
Applying properties of operations as strategies to multiply is a core 3rd grade standard (CCSS 3.OA.B.5) and applied to multi-digit multiplication in 4th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Explain commutative as "commuting": just like you commute to school and back home, numbers can trade places (3 x 7 = 7 x 3). For distributive, call it "breaking apart": break 14 into 10 and 4 to make multiplying easy.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing property names, mistaking the associative property for the commutative property.
- Distributing to only the first addend in distributive problems (writing 4 x (10 + 2) = 40 + 2 = 42 instead of 48).
- Thinking subtraction follows commutative properties like multiplication does.
