About Elapsed Time
What this skill is
Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes from the beginning of an event to its conclusion, calculated by bridging forward through hours and minutes.
When children learn it
Calculating elapsed time intervals in minutes using number line diagrams is explicitly taught in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.MD.A.1) and refined in 4th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Use the "Mountains, Hills, and Rocks" strategy on an open number line: draw big mountains for whole hours, hills for 10-minute chunks, and tiny rocks for 1-minute hops. Sum the hops at the end to find the exact elapsed time.
Common Mistakes
- Subtracting digital times directly like standard column subtraction (such as 3:15 - 1:45 = 1:70).
- Losing track of the hour change when minutes cross the 60-minute mark.
- Confusing elapsed time duration with the finishing clock time.
