About Telling Time
What this skill is
Telling time translates the positions of the short hour hand and long minute hand on an analog dial into digital hours and minutes.
When children learn it
Telling time to the hour and half-hour is taught in 1st grade (CCSS 1.MD.B.3). Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes and exact minute is mastered in 2nd and 3rd grade (CCSS 2.MD.C.7, 3.MD.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Hook Hand Rule": the short hour hand has a little hook. It belongs to the number it just passed, not the number it is heading toward. On worksheets, have your child draw a small arrow showing which number the hour hand just left.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the short hour hand with the long minute hand.
- Reading the next hour when the minute hand approaches 12 (reading 2:55 as 3:55 because the hour hand points close to 3).
- Reading the minute hand as the printed numeral (saying 8 minutes instead of 40 minutes when the long hand is on the 8).

Teach the two hands separately. First your child learns that the short hand names the hour, then that the long hand counts minutes, and only then do they put the two together. Ten minutes a day with a paper clock and printable telling time worksheets works better than one long session on the weekend.
