About AM and PM

What this skill is

AM (ante meridiem: before noon) and PM (post meridiem: after noon) divide the 24-hour day into two 12-hour cycles centered on noon and midnight.

When children learn it

Distinguishing AM and PM in relation to daily activities is explicitly taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.MD.C.7).

Teaching Tips

  • Create a "Sun and Moon" timeline: draw a sun for AM (waking up, breakfast, morning school) and stars for PM (lunch, dinner, bedtime). Label daily home routines with AM and PM together.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing 12:00 AM (midnight) with 12:00 PM (noon lunch time).
  • Assuming AM means "always light outside" and PM means "always dark outside".
  • Labeling morning breakfast events as PM.
