What this skill is
AM and PM distinguishes between the two 12-hour halves of a 24-hour day: AM (midnight to noon, morning) and PM (noon to midnight, afternoon/night).
When children learn it
AM and PM distinction is taught in 2nd and 3rd grade, aligned to 2.MD.C.7.
Teaching Tips
- Associate 12:00 PM with lunchtime (noon) and 12:00 AM with sleeping (midnight).
- Sort daily activity cards into AM or PM columns.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking 12:00 AM is noon instead of midnight.
- Confusing early morning hours before sunrise as PM.
