About R-Controlled Vowels
What this skill is
When a vowel is followed immediately by the letter r, the r controls the sound, creating a completely new vowel sound that is neither short nor long. Examples include "ar" in star, "or" in fork, and the three spelling twins "er" in her, "ir" in bird, and "ur" in surf.
When children learn it
R-controlled vowels are introduced in 1st grade (usually starting with ar and or) and practiced through 2nd and 3rd grade, where children learn when to use er, ir, or ur in spelling.
Teaching Tips
- Circle the vowel and the r together as a pair before reading the word aloud.
- Use word banks when spelling er, ir, and ur words, since determining which spelling to use relies largely on visual memory.
