About Word Families
What this skill is
A word family (also called a phonogram or rime) is a group of words that share the exact same ending vowel and consonant pattern, such as -at (cat, bat, hat, sat). Learning word chunks helps children read whole groups of words by analogy instead of sounding out every letter from scratch.
When children learn it
Short vowel word families like -an and -og are introduced in kindergarten and 1st grade. Long vowel families like -ake and -ight appear in 1st through 3rd grade as students encounter silent e and vowel teams.
Teaching Tips
- Write the family chunk on a sticky note (like "-at") and slide different initial consonants in front of it to build words quickly.
- Encourage your child to use known words as stepping stones: "If you know how to read hop, what word is top?"
Common Mistakes
- Sounding out the ending chunk letter-by-letter every time instead of recognizing it as a single unit.
- Confusing similar ending chunks like -am and -an.
