About Trigraphs
What this skill is
A trigraph is a group of three letters that combine to represent a single spoken sound. Common trigraphs include "tch" in catch, "dge" in bridge, and "igh" in night. They appear frequently in English spelling to signal vowel lengths and word endings.
When children learn it
Trigraphs are taught in late 2nd grade and throughout 3rd grade. Students learn these patterns after mastering two-letter digraphs like ch and sh.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the short-vowel checkpoint: "tch" and "dge" almost always follow immediately after a short vowel (match, judge).
- Underline all three letters together so your child sees them as a single spelling block before reading.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to pronounce individual silent letters (such as pronouncing the "d" in "badge" or the "g" in "night").
- Spelling words with "ch" instead of "tch" after short vowels (writing "wach" instead of "watch").
