About Cause and Effect
What this skill is
Cause and effect explores the relationship between actions: the cause is the reason why something happened, and the effect is the resulting outcome. Recognizing this pattern helps students understand narrative plot twists and science phenomena.
When children learn it
Cause and effect relationships are introduced in 2nd grade with clear signal words (because, so) and progress in 3rd through 5th grade to multi-step causal chains.
Teaching Tips
- Ask two guiding questions in order: "What happened?" (Effect) and then "Why did it happen?" (Cause).
- Hunt for transition signal words: "because", "since", "so", and "as a result".
Common Mistakes
- Flipping the cause and the effect (thinking wet grass caused the rain, instead of rain causing wet grass).
- Assuming that because one event happened after another, the first event caused the second.
