About Compare and Contrast
What this skill is
Comparing means looking for how two people, stories, or objects are alike, while contrasting means examining how they are different. Students use graphic organizers like Venn diagrams to sort shared and unique qualities.
When children learn it
Comparing characters begins in 1st and 2nd grade. Comparing two different passages on the same historical event or scientific topic is mastered in 4th and 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Search for comparison signal words ("both", "similarly", "also") and contrast signal words ("however", "unlike", "on the other hand").
- Color code traits: highlight shared details in green and unique differences in blue.
Common Mistakes
- Listing only differences while overlooking subtle similarities shared by both subjects.
- Putting unique traits into the center overlap of a Venn diagram by mistake.
