About Fact and Opinion

What this skill is

A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false using research, data, or observation. An opinion is a personal belief, feeling, or judgment that cannot be proven true for everyone (like "chocolate is the tastiest ice cream").

When children learn it

Fact and opinion sorting is taught in 2nd and 3rd grade. In 4th and 5th grade, students evaluate how opinions are woven into persuasive news articles and editorial texts.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask the proof test: "Can we look this up in an encyclopedia or measure it with a ruler, or is it how someone feels?"
  • Spot value judgment words that signal opinions: "best", "worst", "beautiful", "boring", and "delicious".

Common Mistakes

  • Believing an opinion is a fact because many people agree with it or because it sounds authoritative.
  • Thinking a false statement cannot be a fact (a false fact is still a statement that can be proven or disproven).
